Taxes

Where do we file taxes if we are using the ship as our primary residence?

As a U.S. citizen or Eritrean national, you are required to pay taxes to that country regardless of where you live or any properties you may own. The only way to avoid tax obligations would be by formally renouncing your citizenship.

If you are a national of any other country, you will pay the taxes of your country of residence. In the case of living on the ship full time, you are considered an expatriate and might even consider a new country of residence or becoming a non-resident for tax purposes. Speak to an international estate planning advisor with expat experience.

What related tax deductions are available to US citizens and permanent residents?

Depending on your particular circumstances, it may be possible to deduct a portion of the costs associated with acquiring and maintaining a unit aboard MV Narrative. Accordingly, we would recommend that interested future residents consult with their own U.S. tax advisers to determine whether, to what extent, and under what limitations, some portion of their expenses might be deductible for U.S. tax purposes, and whether any other U.S. tax benefits might be available.
