Are there virtual windows in the inside residences?
The RU1.1 Discover internal units are intended to have a virtual window / virtual balcony so you can wake up to the view in your current location by viewing CCTV virtual reality TV of a “live” display of our outside surroundings.
The ceiling heights depend on the unit type but are quite similar. The lowest height will be around 2.20 meters in the RU1, and the highest will be 2.35 meters in the RU5. Bear in mind that in a normal cruise ship, the deck head clearance is normally around 2.05 meters, 2.10 at most.
No. It won’t be needed because there is air conditioning with a fan and you can set the temperature to whatever you’d like. You’ll have full environmental control so there’s no real need to have an extra fan or a heater – you just choose the temperature you want in the room.
The water that’s on board will be taken on from different ports most of the time, so it really depends on what the softness of the water is that we pick up. The water will be sanitized after bunkering to USPH standards. It will be as safe as in the US. When we’re at sea, we make our own water using a reverse osmosis system which has a very small amount of residual salt in it. That is soft water. There will also be an upgrade option available to have additional water filtration in the units.
Cruise ships are generally designed as more of a hotel so the insulation and the paneling between units is not always as effective as you would expect in an apartment. Sound and insulation is of very high importance to us. All residential units are subject to strict noise level restrictions in their design based on Lloyds Register’s highest level known as ‘comfort class’ criteria PCAC1,1. We’ve also asked the shipyard to look at minimizing both structural and airborne noise and vibration transfer between the units. We’ve discussed a number of systems available to minimize that. Our noise requirements are very stringent.
Every home will have a refrigerator, whether it’s a wine fridge or a regular fridge, it’s your choice. It will also have a coffee machine or you can upgrade to an espresso machine. And there’ll be an option to have a built-in microwave (in some units) and a toaster as well if you want those items. There are also some other appliances to choose from, depending on the size of the unit, such as cooktops and under-counter freezers and dishwashers. Will residences have a small bar sink?
The kitchenette depends on the size of the unit. The smaller units RU1-2 don’t have a sink in the mini bar, but the larger units RU3-5 do.
Is there any regulation for furniture if a resident would want to bring something in their unit?
All furnishings, built-ins, and fixtures need to meet the stringent requirements imposed on us by the classification society. These are controlled by regulations such as SOLAS and others for the safety of all residents, guests and crew. This includes fire retardation of the materials and other considerations that do not apply to private land residences.
We highly encourage you to try the furnishings that come with your residence. If there is anything that is not working for you, then you can replace it at your own expense in compliance with the above requirement.
Does the ship have rollaway beds and baby cribs for visitors?
The ship will have a few roll-away beds and baby cribs for visitors. We will fit these where possible, even if that means that some of the loose furniture is temporarily taken out.
When the murphy bed is still in its upright position, there are two options residents can choose from to furnish the area beneath.
Reclining furniture subject to space availability and feasibility.
Will each home have an independent thermostat that controls only that cabin?
Each residence is equipped with a personal thermostat to control the heating and air conditioning for your comfort level.
The three major functions of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning are interrelated. Thus, our HVAC design has fresh air intakes to all cabins with individual apartment recirculating units containing filtration and air sanitation. Exhaust from the residential units is to a main exhaust in the funnel. This means any recirculated air is only recirculated to/from the same residence, and is treated on its way to being reused.
Your residence can receive bi-weekly cleaning services. Our housekeeping staff is available around the clock to help with spills, maintenance, immediate needs and trash removal that falls outside of the standard cleaning schedule. This amenity is offered at no additional cost and is provided with your ‘all-inclusive’ fees.
Daily pick up and delivery wash and fold service is included as part of annual assessments. You may use the self-service laundries on board should you wish.
